Back in the early 90's, the Propeller Club initiated
a scholarship programe by sponsoring a single student
from an underprivileged family at Don Bosco Technical
School, Makati. Since that time the programme has grown
appreciably and there are now 10 sponsored students
in the scheme.
The Club uses the interest accruing from funds raised
from members to pay for the programme.
Every year a special dinner auction is held towards
the end of October to raise funds for the project. Each
member attending the function brings along an item to
be auctioned off and substantial funds have been raised
over the years as a result of this dinner auction event.
At Don Bosco, the Propeller Club students are enrolled
in the one year Ship Mechanic Course which was set up
several years ago by Stolt Nielsen Tankers who have
ended up employing many of the Club's scholars in the
past. For the last two years Stolt have been instrumental
in arranging on board training for the Club's scholars
with a trip on the training ship M.V. Felix Oca (last
year they went to Boracay, this year to Palawan).
Once they finish their studies in the Ship Mechanic
Course ,the students must complete 5 months on-the-job
training. In this respect the Club assists Don Bosco
in trying to find places for the sponsored students
in the companies of Club members or elsewhere.
In order to improve their English capability, the Club
arranges for each yearly batch to undergo extra English
lessons which are conducted by Ms. Liberty 'Libay' Zarate
who also acts as a coordinator between the Club and
Don Bosco.
Due to declining interest rates the Propeller Club
has struggled to keep up the number of students they
are sponsoring at Don Bosco. However with the continued
support of the members, the Club has been able to maintain
their quota and hopes to expand the programme in the
years to come
