Club History

The Propeller Club of Manila was formed back in 1971 and is a non-profit organization with a membership currently standing at 110. Originally the members were mostly from the offices of U.S. liner companies in Manila but now the members of the Club are drawn from all different sectors of the shipping industry. Today the membership consists of Filipino, American, British, French, Swedish, Italian, German, Irish, Spanish, Norwegian, Danish, Indian, Singaporean, Korean, Australian and New Zealand nationals who are involved in shipowning, shipbroking, ship insurance, surveying, ship classification, manning ship agency and other maritime related activities. Although the majority of members are in some way involved in the shipping industry, there are a substantial number who work in other fields.

The Club holds a regular luncheon on the penultimate Wednesday of each month and the usual venue is the Traders Hotel, Roxas Boulevard, for which a guest speaker is arranged to talk to the membership.

About 10 years ago the Club started a scholarship programme and every year the Club arranges a fundraising auction to raise funds for this purpose which is held on a Saturday evening in October.

Over the years the Club, through the generosity of the members, has been ableto build up funds to sponsor an increasing number of disadvantaged young men at Don Bosco Technical School and as of this time enough money has been accumulated to pay for the tuition of 10 students annually at Don Bosco using the interest from the capital sum on deposit.
